Project: Preschool (also known as Engage C in Some Productive Activities So I Don't Have a Complete Breakdown Before Summer Is Over)

Being a mom is hard. Really hard. And I only have two kids. I daily think of certain individuals - Sara Karlson, Nina Jones, Mamie Smith, and Carrie Llanos, to name a few who have four or more children- and think, "How are they staying sane?" So now that I've had several days in a row of wonderful together-time with both of my children, I decided I needed to do some activities with C. Bring on my preschool teacher mode! This week's theme is Rainbows and here are two activities we've done so far. My goal for the rest of the summer weeks is to read one theme-related book each day and do two activities - art, snack, games, etc. Yesterday we made Fruit Loop graphs, which was a snack and counting activity in one. I printed a simple graph with color words, gave C a bowl of Fruit Loops, and had him sort them. Once that was done, we drew a line above the top one on each color. Then, once he ate the cereal, he colored in the number of boxes on each color. So, red, orange, green, and purple had all seven boxes colored, yellow had five boxes colored, and blue only had one box colored in. Make sense?

Then today, after reading White Rabbit's Color Book (illustrates color mixing), C made a thumbprint rainbow. Using three colors of washable paint...

we made six colors, simply by mixing to make orange, green, and purple.

The finished product! Stay tuned for more activities. The great thing is, after each project, C is saying things like, "I love this!" and "That sure was fun!" And I didn't get frustrated with him during the day. As much.
